The Stages of a Balloon Flight

Preflight Briefing:

Before each flight, a detailed report of current and forecast weather conditions is obtained from the FAA. As balloons fly only in light or calm winds, usually at sunrise or before sunset as conditions permit, it is very important that your pilot has very accurate information regarding the weather. At this point a 'go/ no-go' decision is made, with safety being the primary consideration.

Set-up and Rigging:

At the launch site, the balloon is made ready to fly-- uprightsUnloading AA2.jpg (709053 bytes) attached, burner attached and tested, the basket is laid on its side. The envelope is then attached to the basket and pulled out of the bag and spread downwind.

Inflation:

Inflation crew.jpg (597310 bytes)There is a certain excitement to the inflation of a hot air balloon. There is a roar as the fans are turned on and the envelope seems to come alive as it is filled with air. Once it is 'packed out' the burner is turned on and the flame heats the air inside the envelope causing the gentle giant to rise majestically and stand over 6 stories tall. Once the balloon is upright and stabilized, the pilot completes safety checks, and asks the passengers to board.  The pilot will perform a pre-flight briefing.  Your balloon flight begins as the balloon slowly lifts off.

The Chase:Chase & trailer.jpg (645227 bytes)

As balloons go wherever the winds blow them, it is important that the crew follow the balloon in the chase vehicle. In constant contact via radio, the chase vehicle attempts to stay near the balloon and be at the landing site, wherever it may be, before the balloon lands.

The Flight:

Celebration over pond.jpg (427167 bytes)Smooth, calm and quiet. Many first time fliers don't fully realize they are off the ground until they are looking down at the tree tops below.  Only the sound of the burner interrupts the peace of a balloon flight. Cars honk their horns, people on the ground wave and cheer as you drift past.  All too soon it is time to land. Slowly you descend to the landing site selected by your pilot.  Smiles break out all around as you touch down and are greeted by the chase crew.

Pack-up and Champagne:Celebration at basket.jpg (269729 bytes)

Once all of the passengers have disembarked, the balloon is deflated and packed up. The envelope and basket are loaded into the chase vehicle and made ready for transport. With pack-up completed, it is time to share the traditional champagne toast with our passengers and the generous landowner who has allowed us to land on his property.  You will share in a post flight celebration of  champagne (non-alcoholic upon request), soft drinks, orange juice, cheese and crackers.   Your pilot will share a brief history of ballooning, man's first recorded mode of flight as well as answer any questions you may have.  You will receive a "1st Flight" certificate in the mail to commemorate your special event.

The Balloonist's Prayer:

The winds have welcomed you with softness
The sun has blessed you with its warm hands
You have flown so high and so well
That God has joined you in your laughter
And set you gently back into the loving arms of Mother Earth
